(Presque Isle, Maine)- The University of Maine at Presque Isle captured the 2009 Sunrise Conference softball championship as they swept Fisher College 10-9 and 20-3 in Presque Isle on Saturday, April 25.  The Owls  advance to an NAIA qualifying tournament at the University of Charleston (WV) against the Winner of the Gulf Coast Conference.  The best two-out-of-three tournament will be on April 30 and third game if necessary on May 1.  The winner moves on to the NAIA national tournament which will be held May 14-20 at the Wilson Morgan Sports Complex in Decatur, Ala.

In the opening game Brittany Humphrey ripped a two-out game-winning triple in the bottom of the seventh inning giving the Owls the come from behind win. 

Humphrey finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.  Erica Davis went 3-for-4 including a three-run home run and a double.  Desiree Smith added two hits, three runs and two RBIs. 

Nicole Russell struck out seven and gave up 10 hits and four walks in seven innings for Presque Isle.

The Falcons were led by Brittany Calderon who surrendered eight hits and seven walks with three strikeouts.  Calderon also went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Danielle Palmerino finished with two hits and two RBIs and Michelle Oliverio went 2-for-5 with a double.

In the nightcap the Owls pounded out 21 hits and took advantage of 12 Falcons error to win the championship.

Emily Moore went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs and limited the Falcons to just three hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Davis had three singles and two RBIs.  Russell went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Cassie Green had three RBIs.  Smith and Erin Pelletier each chipped in two RBIs.

Palmerino went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs for Fisher.  Debbie Fuller doubled and Jackie Streeter gave up all 20 runs with four strikeouts.
