(Charleston, W.Va.)- The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team lost in a national qualifier 15-1 and 25-0 to nationally-ranked William Carey University of Mississippi at the University of Charleston in West Virginia on April 30.
The fifth-ranked Crusaders smacked 12 hits in the first game and 23 more in the second game.
In the opener Desiree Smith singled and scored on a passed ball for the Owls lone run. Kathleen Higgins also had a single. Nicole Russell took the loss as she gave up five walks with one strikeout in four innings.
Bree Neidhardt went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and three runs for William Carey. Kelsey Jo Smith allowed just one run and struck out four to pick up the win.
In the second game Erica Davis singled for the Owls only hit of the game. Erin Moore allowed two walks and didn't strike out a batter in seven innings.
Neidhardt garnered tournament MVP honors going 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and four runs. Larke Nightengale banged out a pair of doubles and drove in six runs and Melanie Bush struck out two to collect the win.
