The Sunrise Conference recently announced their 2009 individual award winners and all-conference team for baseball and Scott Dulin and Thomas Englehardt of Fisher College were honored once again with two of the top awards. Dulin was named Coach of the Year for the fourth straight year and Englehardt was named Player of the Year for the second year in a row.
This was the sixth time Dulin has been honored in his eight years at Fisher. The University of Maine at Farmington graduate guided the Falcons to a fifth straight conference championship and a 28-20-1 overall record. Dulin also captured career win number 200 this season.
Englehardt, a senior third baseman, led the conference and was 10th in the country in hitting with a .467 average. The Bradford, Mass. native also led the conference in runs scored (44) and doubles (15) and was fourth in RBIs with 38.
Tyson Tash of the University of Maine at Presque Isle was named Rookie of the Year and the College of St. Joseph won the Team Sportsmanship Award. Tash batted .321 with five doubles, two triples and 15 RBIs.
Joining Englehardt on the all-conference team was: catchers Edwin Pena (Fisher College) and Greg Butler (Vermont Technical College); D.J. Charette (University of Maine at Presque Isle) at first base; Tyler Delaney (University of Maine at Presque Isle) at second base; Kevin Ryan (Fisher College) at shortstop; Jordan Hodge (Vermont Technical College) as an extra infielder; Eddy Delcarmen (Fisher College) as the designated hitter; Jacques DeMars (SUNY Canton), Brandon Fox (College of St. Joseph), Zack Thompson (Fisher College) and Jeff Savage (Vermont Technical College) in the outfield; Austin Brodie (Fisher College) as a relief pitcher; and starting pitchers Savage, Corey Harding (University of Maine at Presque Isle), Samuel Luciano (Fisher College), and Patrick Shanahan (Fisher College).
Pena led the conference in home runs (9) and RBIs (47) and batted .353. Butler batted .304 and scored 30 runs. Charette batted .369 and stroked seven doubles and drove in 28 runs. Delaney led the conference in triples with nine and was second in hitting (.426), runs (42), RBIs (42), home runs (6) and doubles (11). Ryan batted .338 and had seven triples, seven doubles and 24 RBIs. Hodge batted .395 with three triples, three doubles, two home runs and 26 RBIs. Delcarmen smacked six homes runs and batted .341 with 39 RBIs. DeMars was fifth in batting at .400 and had three triples and 23 RBIs. Fox had three doubles and seven RBIs. Thompson batted .360 with 11 doubles and 31 RBIs and Savage recorded a .405 average with nine doubles and 22 RBIs.
Shanahan led the conference in strikeouts (75) and earned-run average (3.44) and held opponents to a .239 average in 52 innings. Luciano recorded a conference-high six wins and had a 4.08 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings. Savage notched a 4.32 ERA and struck out 24 batters in 33 innings and Harding had a 5.06 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 48 innings.
Brodie appeared in 20 games and was 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 28 innings.
The conference also handed out Gold Glove Awards and those went to: Pena, Charette, Mike Oliveira (Fisher College) at second base, Englehardt, Adam Blair (SUNY Canton) at shortstop, Savage in left field, DeMars in center field, Fox in right field and pitcher Justin Storie (SUNY Canton).
