(Scarborough, Maine)- Top-seeded and fifth-ranked University of Maine at Fort Kent began their journey to get back to the national championship with a 2-0 win over No. 4 University of Maine at Presque Isle in the Sunrise Conference men's soccer tournament in Scarborough, Maine. The Bengals, who advanced to the elite eight of the NAIA national tournament last year, remained undefeated at 16-0-1 and will play No. 2 University of Maine at Machias in the championship game on Saturday. Machias beat No. 3 SUNY Canton 4-1 in the other first-round game.
The Owls kept Fort Kent's lethal offense off the scoreboard thanks to five stellar saves and several other deflections by Presque Isle goalie Richard Felbaum. Felbaum finished with seven saves overall.
Fort Kent finally broke through 2:15 into the second half when Spencer Jacoby served a nice crossing pass to a streaking Dwayne Smith who headed the ball past Felbaum for a 1-0 lead.
The Bengals made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute when Smith set up Jermaine West for the insurance goal.
Giovanni Sinclair had one save in 61 minutes and David Girouard had no saves in 29 minutes after replacing Sinclair who left with a slight injury.
