(Azuza, Calif.)- Despite a record-setting performance from goalie Mindy Morneault, the University of Maine at Fort Kent women's soccer team saw their season come to an end as they lost to No. 4 Azuza Pacific 3-0 in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship.
Morneault, the Sunrise Conference Defensive Player of the Year, set a single-game NAIA playoff record with 24 saves breaking the previous mark of 22 set by Georgian Court University in 1995. The Eagle Lake, Maine native had 12 saves in each half.
The Bengals suffered their first loss of the season finishing 17-1. The Cougars, who set an NAIA record with 46 shots on Saturday, improved to 15-3-1 and they advance to the final round of 16 in Decatur, Ala. Nov. 30 to Dec. 5
Azuza scored just 3:56 into the opening half when Molly Lavin scored off a nice clearing pass. Katie Rorabaugh scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute and then Theresa Broad capped off the scoring with a goal in the 85th minute. Azuza had two other penalty kick chances, one that hit the post and one that sailed wide.
The Bengals only shot of the game came two minutes into the second half when all-conference midfielder Theresa Biggs fired a shot toward goal that was stopped by Cougars goalie Michelle Wieland, who had notched her seventh shutout of the year.
