(Fort Kent, Maine)- Indiana Tech University provided the biggest upset of the opening round of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship as they shocked No. 2 University of Maine at Fort Kent 1-0 in overtime.
In the 100th minute Elliot Everson took a pass from teammate Joel Putek and fired a high shot that beat Bengals goalie Giovanni Sinclair sending the Warriors (13-6-3) to the final round of 16 in Fresno, Calif.
The Bengals, who made the tournament by winning their fourth straight Sunrise Conference championship, end their season 17-1-1.
Fort Kent out shot Indiana Tech18-6 with a 9-2 advantage coming on goal, but Warriors senior goalie Josh Verhulst made numerous outstanding stops to keep his team in the game.
One those saves came with time winding down in regulation. With just under a minute remaining, Verhulst scrambled on the ground to get a hand on a shot from Jermaine West who was six yards from the goal. Somehow Verhulst deflected the sure goal sending the game into overtime.
Fort Kent also had two other good scoring chances in the waning moments of regulation but were unable to convert either one.
Verhulst finished with seven saves and Sinclair had one on two shots for the Bengals who also took 14 corner kicks to Indiana Tech's 2.
