(Concord, N.H.) - Top-seeded University of Maine at Fort Kent won their third straight Sunrise Conference women's basketball championship as they beat No. 3 SUNY Canton 86-49 at New Hampshire Technical Institute.
The Bengals reeled off an 11-2 run to start the game, including nine points from Talisha Herring who matched SUNY Canton's first-half output with 21 points.
Herring scored seven more points and the lead swelled to 27-9 as SUNY Canton went scoreless for an eight-minute stretch.
SUNY Canton did put together a little run of their own late in the first half with eight consecutive points before another Herring layup made it 41-21 at half.
Herring finished with 25 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bengals, who improved to 18-8 overall and will now advance to the NAIA Division II national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa March 10-16.
Kristen Violette added 15 points and seven rebounds. Morgan Chasse also had 15 points and Amber Garrison chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.
Heather Lottie shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line for 20 points, 14 coming in the second half to lead the Roos (12-13). Julie Vander Wiel scored eight points. Kirsten Morley added seven points and three rebounds and Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) contributed six points, three rebounds and three steals.
