(Fort Kent, Maine)- The University of Maine at Fort Kent women's basketball teams has drawn the top-seed and the number one team in the country, Hastings College (Neb.) in the opening round of the NAIA Division II National Championship. The Bengals will face off against the Broncos on Wednesday, March 10 at 1:45 (CST) at the Tyson Events Center / Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa. The winner will advance to the second round on Friday, March 12.
Fort Kent is making their sixth appearance in the national tournament after winning the Sunrise Conference regular season and conference tournament championships. The Bengals are 19-8 overall and have won the Sunrise Conference championship three straight years, this year beating SUNY Canton 86-49 in the title game in Concord, N.H.
Fort Kent is led by three players who were named to the all-conference First Team. Senior forward Kristen Violette from Eagle Lake, Maine led the team in scoring averaging 17.0 points per game. She also grabbed 6.8 rebounds, shot 51 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Talisha Herring from Junction City, Kansas averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists. She sank 43 3-pointers and shot 74 percent from the free throw line. Junior guard Amber Garrison from Oroville, Calif. started every game this year for the Bengals and contributed 7.8 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 steals.
The Bengals' Lucas Levesque was named the conference Coach of the Year.
Hastings (30-3) has won the national championship three times and has advanced to the final four six times. They're making their 10th straight tournament appearance after winning both the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular and tournament championships.
The Broncos are led by 6'2" senior forward Lindsay Ducey, a three-time all-GPAC First Team selection. This season Ducey averaged 19.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 85 percent from the free throw line. She also collected 85 assists, 48 blocks and 26 steals. Senior guard Kim Faimon also made the all-GPAC First Team and was the conference Defensive Player of the Year. Faimon averaged 2.8 steals per game along with 9.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
Jeff Pittman was named the GPAC Coach of the Year.
