(Point Lookout, Mo.)- The University of Maine at Fort Kent men's basketball team lost in the opening round of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Championship as they lost to top-seeded Walsh University (Ohio) 97-69 Wednesday in Point Lookout, Mo.
Fort Kent, who won their first Sunrise Conference championship this year, end their season at 21-9. Walsh won their 10th straight game improving to 29-2 and will play in the second on Friday against the University of Sioux Falls.
The Bengals couldn't overcome a large first-half deficit as Walsh opened the game on a 10-0 run over the first five minutes and eventually stetched that lead to 49-27 at the break. Eight points in that opening run came from American Mideast Player of the Year Jimmy Jackson who had a double-double at halftime and finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds. The senior shot 9-for-14 from the field and hit all four of his free throws.
Fort Kent fared better in the second half as they were only out scored by six points, 48-42.
Jeremy Thomas came off the bench to score 18 points for Fort Kent. The sophomore knocked down six of the Bengals' 13 three-point baskets and he also had six rebounds and five assists. Senior Jimmy Lopez, an all-Sunrise Conference First Team selection, nailed four threes and had 20 points in his final game in a Fort Kent uniform. Junior Othniel Hyliger added eight points and eight rebounds and sophomores Brandon Fox and Devon Speaks each had six points apiece.
Brandon Speck added 16 points and four rebounds for Walsh and Lamar Skeeter contributed 14 points, eight in the first half, and eight rebounds.
